Population distribution means the pattern of where people live. Worldpopulation distribution is uneven. Places which are sparsely populated contain few people. Places which are densely populated contain many people. Sparsely populated places tend to be difficult places to live.

Dot methods are used primarily to express distribution of discrete quantitative characteristics, especially point phenomena. The distribution of points on a map represents the distribution of the given phenomenon in reality, and also shows the change in the intensity or dispersion. The usage is preceded by geographic analysis of the phenomenon occurrence, on which basis a territory free of the phenomenon and the centre of the largest density of the phenomenon are defined.

A dot is a symbol, respectively a circle of a small size. Besides dots, we can also use other simple geometric shapes - such as a square or a triangle. Quantitative characteristics are expressed using dots importance, where each symbol is attached by a particular value - for example 1 dot = 100 people. One dot may represent more than one object - in this case, the dots are deployed in space and not localized. For the distribution of dots, topographical and cartogram approaches are used.
