Answer:

Rome was able to gain its empire in large part by extending some form of citizenship to many of the people it conquered. Military expansion drove economic development, bringing enslaved people and loot back to Rome, which in turn transformed the city of Rome and Roman culture.

Answer:

  • They conquered neighbouring latin tribes and then turned their neighbours into Roman citizens e.g Sabines. .Then they conquered nearby Italian tribes and gradually brought them into Roman citizenship, e.g Samnite Wars.
  • When they fought the Punic wars against Carthage and won they then found themselves in possession of an empire which included Tunisia in Africa, South Eastern Spain, Sicily, Sardinia and some other islands.
  • They made alliances with other Italian territories, but gradually took them over. When the allies resisted in 91 to 88 BC the Romans fought the “Social War” to take them over fully.
  • They conquered some countries by invasion, including Gaul, Britain, Greece etc.
  • They “inherited” some countries e.g. Bithynia when their rulers thought they would be better off in the Roman sphere of influence.
  • They were invited into Egypt to settle a dispute over inheritance between Cleopatra and her brother Ptolemy. It ended up becoming a Roman province.
