Let the number which must be subtracted be 'X'

3-X\7-X=2/5[ratio is expressed in fraction here]

15-5X=14-2X[by cross multiplication]

3X=1[by taking like terms one side]

X=1/3

Therefore 1/3 is to be added to 3:7 s that the ratio becomes 2:5
