The length of barometer tube used to measure atmospheric pressure should be 10.3 metres if water is used instead of mercury. (Option a)

• To measure, the atmospheric pressure by a mercury filled barometer we need a length of approximately 76.5 centimetres.

• Now, mercury is 13.6 times denser than the water and that's why we need 13.6 times longer barometer tube if we use water instead of mercury.

• So,the length of the tube should be

= 76.5 × 13.6

= 1040.4 centimetres

= 10.4 metres

= Can be rounded off as 10.3 metres

• So,we need a barometer of more than 10 metres of height if we use water insted of mercury,in the barometer.
