Concept:

A ratio is a fraction which indicates how many times one quantity contains as compared to the other quantity. If it is represented in the form a:b, it indicates fraction a/b where first term acts as numerator and second term as denominator.

Given:

ratio of the form a:b given as 7:5

Find:

what must be added to the ratio 7:5 to make it 5:4

Solution:

Let the quantity to be added be 'x'

Now, By considering the given data,

the equation becomes

(7+x):(5+x)=5:4 which is

(7+x)/(5+x)=5/4

therefore, by cross multiplying the equation becomes

4*(7+x) =5*(5+x)

28 + 4x = 25 +5x

28-25 =5x-4x

3 = x

therefore x=3

Hence 3 must be added to both terms in 7:5 to make it 5:4
