Let the number be x.

x - 1 = 5/3

x = 5/3 + 1

x = 5 + 3/3

x = 8/3.

Verification:

8/3 - 1 = 8 - 3/3

           = 5/3.

Therefore the number will be 8/3.

Hope this helps!
