Let x be the number.

.

 -\dfrac{2}{3} - x = \dfrac{1}{6}

  x = -\dfrac{2}{3} - \dfrac{1}{6}

 x = -\dfrac{2 \times 2}{3 \times 2} - \dfrac{1}{6}

 x = -\dfrac{4}{6} - \dfrac{1}{6}

 x = -\dfrac{5}{6}

.

Answer: x = -5/6

-2/3 - 1/6 = -4-3/6
=-7/6
so, -7/6 should be subtracted to get 1/6
