during prophase( longest and complex stage of mitosis):

1. Centrioles start moving apart and reach opposite poles.

2. chromosomes become distinct.

3. Nuclear membrane and nucleolus disappear.

4. Chromosomes are already duplicated as paired chromosomes and chromatids attach to each at a small region called centromere.

Prophase is the first stage in mitosis, occurring after the conclusion of the G2 portion of interphase. During prophase, the parent cell chromosomes — which were duplicated during S phase — condense and become thousands of times more compact than they were during interphase.
