These are used for polynomials in one variable where p/g/f/etc is used for the identity of a polynomial and x,etc is used for the variable.

If the variable is different, like y,z,a,etc. It will be P(y,z,a,etc)

P( *any variable* ) is used defaultly for identifying a polynomial in one variable.
