A parabola is a curve where any point is at an equal distance from: a fixed point (the focus ), and. a fixed straight line (the directrix ).
When b = 0, the vertex of the parabola lies on the y-axis. Changing b does not affect the shape of the parabola (as changing a did). Making b positive or negative only reflects the parabola across the y-axis.
