Hutum Pyanchar Naksha (literally "sketches by a Watching Owl") authored by Kaliprasanna Singha (1841–1870) was first published in 1862. The book occupies a special place in Bengali Literature. During the nineteenth century several factors caused some kind of strain within the Bengali society. The factors include conversion to Christianity, emergence of brahmonism, sea voyage, not as per the orthodox view, social reform programme adopted by the reformers of that time, etc. All this which caused turmoil in the Bengali society found expression in the pages of the Hutum Panchyer Nakshya, which keenly recounted them. It looked at the changes that had been taking place in society. It noticed and expressed with irony and bawdy humour how the old and the new lived side by side.[1] The first English translation of this book was published in 2008.[2]
