So the first one is Lenient parenting. It generally is encouraged by trying to promote self-esteem in the child and make them independent. They believe giving the child choices teaches them to make them as adults and be independent. They want to be nice to the child by showing them respect. They like to talk and reason with the child. They believe by showing respect to the child, the child will demonstrate the same. These children many times are very creative as they got to spend time learning what fascinated them. The problem with these lenient raised children is, parents frequently cannot stand them.
These children learn how to throw temper tantrums and demand to get what they want. They were given power and they will learn to use it. They don’t understand boundaries and limits because their drive is to consume and use everything they can. Explore their world is taken to heart and parents are seen as the suppliers of comfort. They expect it’s the parents job in these child centered homes, to service them. These children are seldom cooperative and are not interested in being helpful around the house.
Frequently this type of kid learns how to make a parent feel guilty. How to be mean and say nasty things to get their way. Often they lack so many inner controls they become very impulsive, unmanageable, and angry anytime their needs aren’t met on their time-schedule. Too much lenient parenting tend to make kids selfish and self-centered.
That tends to expand as a expectation toward life for kids who are used to getting their way at the expense of others. They come across as spoiled to other people. Even other kids find them unpleasant to be around because they usually quite dislikable. Life to them is get, get, get- take, take, take. “It’s all about me.” They don’t respect other people's property nor feelings, just like they’ve learned at home. Often this kind of child is unloved by peers.
Sadly the most serious effects is that developmentally, these kids often end up with deep feelings of insecurity about their parents' love too. When kids have been given the power and parents end up servicing them, resentment starts to build up in those parents. It’s hard to feel loving and accepting when you start feeling unappreciated and used. For some parents it’s "peace at any price"- surrendering can be not only costly, but deadly.
I had some patients years ago who had a teenager acting out. She had put herself more than once in a dangerous environment situation where she'd been raped. She didn't care.
