First war of independence broke out on April 27,1857 in Meerut in form of soldier mutiny when they were asked by British to use new cartridges (alleged) encased in pig and cow grease. It was curbed within months by British and proved to be a failure. Following steps and preparations could have made it a complete success-
1. Planning and strategy
the war outbreak was spontaneous and thus lacked vision and planning. a strategically planned war could have made it a success.
2. strong leadership
old and frail mughal king was declared emperor on India. lack of strong political and military leadership played a major part in the fiasco. every war needs a strong leader or rally point to look up to and follow.
3. national movement
first war of independence was restricted to few parts and towns and wasn't a true national movement involving the entire country. a fully national movement including people of whole nation could have led to our victory.
