Answer:

For administrative and economic reasons, the British government tried settling the jhum cultivators. However, settled plough cultivation did not prove to be helpful for them. They often suffered because their land did not produce good yields.

Answer:

Jhum cultivation was done by the tribal groups in India. Jhum cultivation is shifting cultivation, which is done on small pieces of land, mostly in the forests. The Jhum cultivators burnt the forest vegetation to clear it for cultivation and cut the treetops to pass sunlight to reach the ground. During the British rule in India, land-use policies were passed to prevent the Jhum cultivators to plough in forests. The Jhum cultivators were made to settle down and to become peasant cultivators for the benefits of the Britishers because the tribal groups would be easier to control and administer.
