Like the Associate Justices, the Chief Justiceis appointed by the President and confirmed by the Senate. There is no requirement that the Chief Justice serve as an Associate Justice, but 5 of the 17 Chief Justices have served on the Court as Associate Justices prior to becoming Chief Justice

The Chief Justice of the High Court in India is appointed by the President on the recommendation of the Chief Justice Of the Supreme Cout and the Governor of the concerned state.

The appointment of all other judges shall also be made in the same manner except that in their case the Chief Justice of the High Court shall also be consulted.

The Supreme Court ruled that Chief Justice of India has to concern two senior most judges of the Supreme Court before making any recommendation to the President in this regard.

This is done two ensure that neither political bias nor personal favoritism would play any role in the election of the judges.
