1) shipping has become more commercialized more and more ships are being used for the fishing and carrying articles from one place to another

2) the number of ports has greatly increased since independence India has no 216 major and minor ports Kandla Port was developed to fulfill the loss of Karachi Nava sheva to relieve pressure of Bombay (Mumbai )and Haldia to relieve pressure of Calcutta

3) no more and more articles are being carried from one part of country to another the total carrying capacity of ships has increased by more than 30 times from 2 lakh tonnes in 1947 it has increased to 6.32 million tonnes in 1987
