The Social division of Indian society into four classes or castes is known as Varnashrama.

The name of these four varnas or castes are : Brahman, Kshatriya, vaishya and shudra.

The Brahman was the priest class, the Kshatriya was the warrior class, the Vaishya were the farmers and trading class and the job of the shudras was menial and to serve the upper three classes.

Initially this division was flexible but later it became very rigid and it was not possible for any one to change his varna and work accordingly.

Caste system is still practiced in India today, though not being so rigid.
