When people  grow food for themselves, it's known as self consumption.
They are usually poor people who does not own big farms and have large scale productions. Most of the work done in their agricultural fields is by their own family members and friends.

Only people who have big farms and enough money to produce surplus of food can sell things out. They hire laborers and will have large scale production.

People who grow food for themselves are among those who are deprived and poor.

They able to grow just enough to feed themselves.

People who grow things to sell are those who are at a slightly better position than them and are able to grow a surplus amount of feed, which they later sell for a certain living.

There may be exceptions, however.
