here are the main functions of Food Corporation of India -
To protect interest of farmer by procuring food grains at MSP.
To protect consumers from too much price fluctuation deu to crop failure or any other reason.
To maintain minimum buffer stock so that any unforseen situation can be met with this stock .
Preservation of food grains because no one other than the FCI has the ability or mandate to store and preserve such wast quantity of food grains .
To transport food grains from surplus production areas to deficit areas so that accessibility to the food can be ensured through out India.

The FCI purchase grains from farmers of state of surplus production.
Farmers are paid a pre announced price for their crops.
This price is called MSP.
The MSP is declared by the government every year before the sowing season.
The purchased grains are stored in granaries.
The food procured by FCI is distributed to poor people through government ration shop.
