Since na in presence of dry ether is giving a symmetrical alkane (see plane of symmetry) therefore it is a wurtz reaction. now reactant of wurtz reaction is an alkyl halide and as itisform we can get the alkyl part by cleaving the product in two similar portions and then adding an halide so we will get CH3C(CH3)(CH3) CH2X . X is for halogen now we get NaBr in product so the halogen must be Br and the reactant is CH3(CH3)(CH3)CH2Br.
