Answer:

On May 10, 1857, these soldiers hoisted the flag of insurrection in response to the greased cartridge incident and the death of Mangal Pandey.

They assassinated British officials, grabbed weapons and ammunition, and set fire to British property. The regiment stationed in Delhi then joined them.

The sepoys then took over Delhi. Because Bahadur Shah Zafar was the final emperor of the Mughal Dynasty, they declared him to be the emperor of India and their leaders.

At the age of 62, Bahadur Shah Zafar (also known as Abou Zafar) rose to the Mughal throne in 1837. He took over for his father, Emperor Akbar Shah II.

Zafar (Persian for "victory") was a poet and artist.
