  • According to the Subsidiary Alliance introduced by Governor General Lord Wellesley  the Indian ruler have to give a certain portion of their territory for the British resident and have to allow a British officer in their court.
  • According to the policy the English East India Company protects the Indian state against any attacks . For the purpose a certain number of troops were kept in the British residents. Mainly a senior British officer was deployed in the court of Indian ruler. It was also a symbol of British authority in their area. A British resident was established inorder to keep an eye on the Indian ruler.

the british promised to give protection from invasions to a ruler who accepted the subsidiary alliance. But , they also reserved the right to depose the ruler in case of any lapse . The British exercised the right in deposing the rulers of Tanjore , Surat and carnatic .
