The glum-faced man played an important role in the story. Firstly,he was playing the role of real Marshal,who catched Mr Easton for the crime of counterfeiting and was taking him to the Leavenworth prison for seven years. But when he saw that Mr Easton is embarrassed due to his handcuffs in front of Miss Fairchild,his old friend,so,being a kind man ,he helped Mr Easton and removed his embarrassment by acting as a criminal and representing Mr Easton as Marshal.
