Osmosis:-

A spontaneous movements of water molecules through a selectively permeable membrane is called Osmosis.

Or we can say that the solvent or water passes through a semi-permeable membrane from a high area of its free energy to a low area of its free energy.

  • A selectively permiable membrane doesn't allow ions to pass but unrestricted passage of water.

  • Osmosis takes place due to the free energy of the solvent molecule in double regions.

Importance of osmosis:-

  • Osmosis plays an important role in the cells of both the plants and animals.
  • It helps in the distribution of nutrients and the extraction of waste products.

process by which molecules of a solvent tend to pass through a semipermeable membrane from a less concentrated solution into a more concentrated one.
