What's the function of the appendix in the digestive system in ancient time?

Function of Appendix in ancient times :---- it was a safe haven where good bacterias could hang out until they were needed to repopulate the gut after a nasty case of diarrhea in ancient time.

But now it is totally a vetignal organ which doesn't help in any way in digestion.
