Seismographs are safely mounted to Earths Surface so when ground shakes the instrument's case moves.
A suspended mass inside seismograph called seismometer.
During an earthquake seismometer remains still but case around it moves along with ground shaking.
Permanent magnet is used for mass and outside case which has various coils of fine wire.
