Albert Einstein feared that the end of World War II in 1945 would not bring a lasting peace. Twice in his long lifetime, he had seen death and suffering caused by large scale wars. But he also played a part in this war.

In August 1939, he wrote to President Roosevelt of the United States, explaining that recent scientific discoveries suggested that it might be possible to develop weapons based on atomic power.

Hence, the Americans developed the atomic bomb in a secret project of their own and dropped it on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in August 1945. Einstein was deeply shaken by the extent of the destruction and felt guilty about making such a destructive weapon.
