You can simply subtract them to get the number which is..

4/9 - 1/4

First get the LCM = 36 then subtract..

16/36 - 9/36 = 7/36 is your answer.

let the number that should be added to 1/4 to get 4/9 be x.

therefore 1/4 + x = 4/9

==> x = 4/9 - 1/4

lcm of 9 and 4 = 9 × 4 = 36

==> x = (4 × 4)/(9 × 4) - (1 × 9)/(4 × 9)

==> x = 16/36 - 9/36

==> x = 7/36

hence, 7/36 must be added to 1/4 to get 4/9.
