●Let we assume the number as 'x' :-
We can say that
 \frac{ - 5}{4}  - x =  - 1
●We can write the above equation as...
 \frac{ - 5}{4}  + 1 = x
●Then, we take the LCM of the Denominators....
 \frac{ - 5 + 4}{4}  = x
●And finally we got the value of 'x'.....
x =  \frac{ - 1}{4}

●So, -1/4 should be substracted from - 5/4 to get - 1.

We can start the above equation as....

 \frac{ - 5}{4}  - ( \frac{ - 1}{4} ) =  - 1
