It is a problem of polynomial subtraction :

Let K has be subtracted from (3x² - 9y² + 3xy + 9) to get 1.

Then,

(3x² - 9y² + 3xy + 9) - K = 1

or, K = (3x² - 9y² + 3xy + 9) - 1

or, K = 3x² - 9y² + 3xy + 9 - 1

i.e., K = 3x² - 9y² + 3xy + 8

∴ (3x² - 8y² + 3xy + 8) has to be subtracted to get 1.
