In South East Asia, India has to tread very carefully because of the overarching presence of China.

As far as the Chinese are concerned, their foreign policy is mostly neutral to the military rule in Myanmar as they want to increase their influence in the region and taking stands which do not favour the military in power can result in some highly unwanted results for them. Given its ambitious BRI (Belt and Road Initiative) it seeks to have friendly relations with whoever is in power.

India's answer to the BRI is Look East Policy (now Act East Policy) as she has kept herself out of the grand BRI plans of China. Favouring or speaking against any one in power in these South East countries can pose problems in expansion of trade and business activities there.

If India opposes the military, then Myanmar might tilt towards China, which has huge capital and resources to lure it, which sadly India lacks in comparison to China. We should not forget that even though, Aung San Suu Kyi is the State Councillor, the military still holds the power with Nayphidaw as a strong fortress. Opposing military might also force India to take a firm stand on Rohingya Muslims genocide and refugee crisis. It's interesting to note that India and China are only two major countries which abstained from taking any firm stand on the issue.

The best way for India is to continue business and diplomacy with the military, without issuing any statement against their legitimacy. As and when the transition to democracy accelerates, India should try to use its soft power by running diplomacy along the lines of culture, which we share more with Myanmar when compared to China, and also to aide it in establishing democracy, where again India has a richer experience.

I hope that it helped u
