The speed must be at least 4.9 miles (7.9 kms per second ) per second to reach to space.

For any object to escape from Earth's atmosphere it should attain a velocity which is more than escape velocity...Escape velocity is 11.2Km/sec...If any object is having velocity more than escape velocity then only it can escape and reach space else Earth's gravitational force will not allow to let the object leave due to attraction.
