Following steps were taken by Lord Wellesley to expand the British power in India:
1- The system of Subsidiary Alliances
Under this alliance, the Indian ruler was half submissive to the British rule and also to pay the subsidy of his territory. Also no Indian ruler was allowed to give employment to people without British approval.

Through outright war, the British rulers attacked the army of tipu and tried to make him surrender.
