In reaction to the growing nationalism , the colonial government took following steps to suppress the feeling of nationalism:The colonial government began arresting prominent Congress leaders such as Abdul Ghaffar Khan, Mahatma Gandhi etc.When Indians started demolishing all structures that symbolised British rule, the frightened government responded with a policy of brutal repression.Peaceful satyagrahis were attacked, women and children were beaten, and about 100,000 people were arrested.

The steps were taken by the colonial government to suppress the growing nationalism in India were as follows:
(1) In 1919, Imperial Legislative Council passed Rowlatt Act. It gave enormous powers to repress political activities, and allowed detention of political prisoners without trail for two years.
(2) When it was opposed by the Indian nationalists, the British administration decided to clamp down on nationalists.
(3) Local leaders were picked up from Amritsar, and Mahatma Gandhi was barred from entering Delhi.
(4) On 10th April, the police in Amritsar fired upon a peaceful procession, provoking widespread attacks on banks, post offices and railway stations.
(5) Martial Law was imposed and General Dyer took command.
