The French began to build canals in the Mekong Delta region which increased the rice production from 1.1mill to 2.2mill between 1873 to 1900. They also started infrastructure projects for transporting goods and moving military garrisons to have a proper control over Vietnam. French also constructed a trans Indo-China rail network that would link north and south Vietnam and China. The final link was completed in 1910 and second line was built linking Vietnam to Thailand via Phnom Penh. They also started schools and universities across Vietnam like Tonkin Frees School and Saigon Native School.

In the year 1883 the French had taken control of all of Vietnam. There were several positives for Vietnam and it's people during the french rule. Some of them are,
- The establishment of colonial administration which helped Vietnam get over the Vietnam dynasty king's rule.
- They brought up land ownership policies which are being used by the Vietnamese till date.
- The standard of education also improved during the french rule.
- A "Pearl of the Orient" consisting of boulevards, casinos, sport clubs, luxury mansions, baccarat clubs, a cathedral and an opium factory on 74 Hai Ba trung Street.
