Step taken for upliftment of women :-
● The custom of polygamy was made illegal amongst the Hindus by the Hindu Marriage Act of 1955 .
● Laws Halloween past two granddaughters the same right to inheritance as sons.
● The practice of taking dowry has been prohibited.
● Schools have been opened for girls and attempts are being made to give them the same opportunities as boys.
● Article 15 (3) direct the state to make special provisions for women and children.
Under the Directive Principles of State Policy many directive have been laid down for the welfare of women.
Some of them are as follows :-
● Article 39 ( A ) state the both men and women have the right to adequate means of livelihood.
● Article 39 ( D ) states that both men and women cell get equal pay for equal work.
● Article 42 states that the state shall make provision for just and human condition of work and for maternity relief.
● Article 243 D ( 3 ) Lays down that in every panchayat not less than one-third of seats reserved for women belonging to the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes. This should be filled by direct elections.
● Article 243 D ( 4 ) Lays down that not less than total number of offices of chairperson in the panchayat at each level shall be reserved for women.
