The Act 1 Scene 1 in MOV mostly emphasises on Antonio’s melancholic behaviour. The way he takes every happening negatively, and also how he thinks that his ships might have been wrecked at sea, make the audience understand that Antinio has given up on a happy life.
In Act 1 Scene 1, two of Antonio’s friends are trying to soothe him and make him believe that his ventures at sea are absolutely alright. They do so by giving him various examples about the church walls, the grass on the field, the hourglass, etc.
Gratiano and Bassanio come into picture in the next half of the scene and the readers witness Gratiano’s extremely talkative behaviour. Gratiano speaks an entire deal of nothing, as said by Bassanio, but his character is a happy-go-lucky type which suddenly switches the distressed atmosphere in the drama to a lighter one.
Bassanio is then left with Antonio since both of them are best buds, where Bassanio talks of borrowing money from Antonio. We can see his extravagant behaviour from this extract.
So basically the very first Act of the Scene is like a brief introduction to the lead roles, which is perfectly put into words by our most beloved playwright- William Shakespeare.
