Chhatrapati was a royal Maratha title given to the ruler Shivaji during Aurangzeb's reign. This title also meant lord of the common people. It was given to the Maratha king Shivaji by his followers and after his death this title was given to his descendants. Aurangzeb was against Chhatrapati Shivaji and this led to the Mughal Maratha wars.
