Hi, thank you for the question.

This is from the story Merchant of Venice by William Shakespeare.

Antonio was a rich and prosperous merchant who traded with countries like England, Portugal and India mainly through ships at sea. He was a kind man and when his friend Bassanio needed money he wanted to help him.

He had no money at hand, as his ships were at sea, but planned to borrow some from Shylock. Shylock was a cruel and cunning man who disliked Antonio. He agreed to lend money to Antonio on one condition, that if Antonio was not able to return the money within the time, Shylock would take a pound of flesh from Antonio. Antonio signed the agreement, as he was sure that he will return the money as soon as his ships arrive.

Tragedy and its consequences

But tragedy befell Antonio. His ships at sea were wrecked and he was not able to collect the money to return to Shylock. Now Shylock demanded to remove a pound of flesh from Antonio.
