I think there are options for this question but anyway
The answer of this question " The emphasis on individual  choice" .
The story "The devil and tom walker " is the story about a man who even sold his soul to a devil for getting a secret treasure by himself only .He was so greedy that he and his wife hide the things that assume to be shared by both of them from each other. This shows about the individual choice of the person.

The Devil and the Walker is a typical instance of American literature in the 19th century. The romanticism in this story explored Tom’s inner mind. While Tom does not give in to materialistic pleasures initially, lust and greed find their way into him and change Tom’s thought focus. He begins to yearn more and more for personal gain and money. This urge manifests in him to such a great extent that it results in his wife’s death. When she was alive, his wife was no different and the author compares her to the Devil. Finally, deprived of love, Tom even contemplates signing a deal with the Devil.
