I don't know this one's answer mate
On a beautiful morning in early June, I swallowed a hard truth. My family had hit a wall when it came to outdoor adventure.
It happened like this. I asked my kids — 7-year-old Jake and 3-year-old Elise — if they wanted to go on a day hike, and they said, “No.” Actually, they didn’t say it; they yelled it.
Inside, I was a little bit crushed. Although Elise has never been what I’d call a major outdoor enthusiast — she prefers playing with her dolls, talking on her fake phone and is lukewarm about being carried in a backpack — Jake has loved our trail explorations since he was a baby. He’d recently gotten a book called “Scat and Tracks,” and I thought for sure he’d be excited to take it beyond our backyard.
But the answer was emphatically clear. I conceded and we walked to the playground, where I sullenly sat in the grass reading a recent issue of Backpacker Magazine, wondering where my husband, Chris, and I had gone wrong. Hadn’t we always made hiking fun, complete with treats; never pushing too hard? What if we’d already failed?
But then, on the final pages of Backpacker, I found inspiration: an article about something called goat packing. It’s just like it sounds. People rent goats and pack them up, sort of like llamas or horses, and go camping. The author of the article had some challenges on his trip, struggling to get the goats to move quickly and cross water. To me it sounded familiar: just like hiking with children. Maybe my family could rent goats and all the “kids” could motivate each other. Perhaps this new adventure was just what my family needed to feel energized in the outdoors.
