The dry cell ( Leclanche cell ) consists of a Zink container which also acts as anode and the cathod is carbon (graphite) rod surrounded by powdered manganese and carbon . The space between the electrodes is filled with a moist paste of NH4Cl and ZnCl2 .

Anode: Zn(s) —> Zn2(+) + 2e(–)

Cathode: MnO2+ NH4(+) + e(–) —>MnO (OH) + NH3

Ammonia producedforms a complex with Zn2+ giving rise to [Zn (NH3)4]2+.

The cell has potential nearly 1.5 V
