However, Bromine water de-colorization is a property of alkenes. Alkenes are a group of organic compounds that possess one or multiple pi bonds. They have the general formula (RC=CR)n, here R can be H or any hydrocarbon group such as methyl, ethyl etc. RC=CR react with bromine water (orange color solution of bromine in water ) and absorb Bromine from water according to the following reaction.
RC=CR(clorless solution, or gas)+Br2(orange)=RBrC-CBrR(colorless solution).
This is why Br2-water become colorless when it is shaken with Alkenes.
