NATURAL LAKE
These are formed due to-
i) glacier activities
ii) tectonic activities-ex:- wular lake
Some lakes are formed due to the action of wind and rivers.
In coastal areas spits and bars form lagoons. Ex- Chilka lake and pulicut lake.
Lakes are also formed due to inland drainage.
eg- Sambhar lake.
MAN MADE LAKES
The lakes are also formed when rivers are dammed for generation of electricity.
ex- Gobind sagar lake.

Salt water lakes: Spit and bars form lagoons or salt water lakes in the coastal areas like the Chilika lake, Pulicat lake and the Kolleru lake.
Freshwater lakes: Most of these are in the Himalayan region
Man-made lakes: The damming of the rivers for the generation of hydel power has also led to the formation of lakes.
