What type of seismic activity happens in an earthquake answer?

Deep underground the plates that make earth's crust are moving around.  

Sometimes they bump into each other at boundaries.  

Because edges of plates aren't smooth and they can't slide one another.  

When they bump into each other edges get stuck but rest of the plate continues to move.  

Eventually rock in the location where plates are stuck breaks and releases large amount of energy.

As a result ground shakes violently and an earthquake occurs.  

This is like pushing on an object that is lodged in place.  

Scientists learn a lot regarding earthquakes by learning seismic activity which is the frequency, size and type of earthquakes an area experiences.
