In solids the type of sound waves produced are longitudinal and transverse  waves too.

They are caused by vibrations of solid particles about their mean position. Because of the close packing of the particles and high value of bulk modulus, the transverse waves are also possible. Reason is the compressibility of the solids.  But in liquids and gases, transverse waves are not possible. These are not compressible.

Because of transverse waves, sound can travel in sideways directions also in addition to the straight direction.
