They are also a major source of criteria air pollutants: particulate matter (PM), nitrogen oxides(NOx), carbon monoxide (CO), hydrogen sulfide (H2S), andsulfur dioxide (SO2). Refineries also release less toxichydrocarbons such as natural gas (methane) and other light volatile fuels and oils.

ummm the major development is dependent on factories as they r like a part of any industry so the major pollution which i know are air pollution and water pollution u can see factories have big chimneys from where smoke emits so they cause pollution and secondly water bcuz waste material of favtories r threw out in river
