Total solar eclipse will occur when the moon is near perigee. Moon has an elliptical orbit around Earth. Perigee is the point of orbit that is close to earth.

A total eclipse takes place when the moon covers the entire disk of sun.

It can take place from a few seconds to 7.5 min and sometimes for several hours.

The moon orbits in such a way that it is 239000 miles in average from Earth creating an illusion that it is much larger in size. This makes the moon’s disk to block out the light from sun.
