The  convict steals the bishops candlesticks and get arrested. But, the bishops saves him by telling a lie that the convict is his friend and he himself had given those candlesticks as a gift. This act of Bishops touches the heart of the convict  greatly. He feels to have become a man from beast . this was the incident acts turning point in his life.
