After Kalinga war:

  • Ashoka attacked Kalinga in 261BCE and annexed it. However, the war caused far more casualties than any war before it.
  • It bought much suffering to the people . Hundreds of men, women and people were killed in the war. This extent of brutality and violence greatly disturbed Ashoka and made him remorseful.
  • As a result of result of Kalinga war, Ashoka gave up and converted into Buddhism.
  • Thereafter he abandoned the policy of physical subjugation in favour of cultural conquest.
  • After changing into Buddhism, Ashoka was greatly inspired by Buddhist principles of non violence and compassion.
  • He expounded the Buddhist philosophy of Dhamma or Dharma . It meant right way or way of truth.
