Kalinga war :
- After his accession to the throne. Ashoka fought only one major war, the Kalinga war. Kalinga was a powerful kingdom on the east coast of India. It was the only major kingdom India that was outside the control of the Mauryas.
After Kalinga war:
- Ashoka attacked Kalinga in 261BCE and annexed it. However, the war caused far more casualties than any war before it.
- It bought much suffering to the people . Hundreds of men, women and people were killed in the war. This extent of brutality and violence greatly disturbed Ashoka and made him remorseful.
- As a result of result of Kalinga war, Ashoka gave up and converted into Buddhism.
- Thereafter he abandoned the policy of physical subjugation in favour of cultural conquest.
- After changing into Buddhism, Ashoka was greatly inspired by Buddhist principles of non violence and compassion.
- He expounded the Buddhist philosophy of Dhamma or Dharma . It meant right way or way of truth.
- Ashoka appointed special officers called dhammamahamatras who spread Dhamma among people.
Principles of Dhamma :
- Obedience and respect to elders and right treatment of poor and dependents.
- Abstinence from killing and injuring of all living beings and follow ahimsa.
- Emphasis on truth , morality and spirituality.
- Peaceful and harmonious coexistence.
